adviento

A while back, we reflected on the idea that we should not live this Christmas just like any other. We can say the same thing about Advent. The time of Advent reminds us not only of the past, celebrating and contemplating Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem, but also of His constant presence among us. It also reminds us that we must always be vigilant and that He will come again in glory.

He will come

Advent means “coming.” For us Christians, it refers to Jesus Christ’s coming. The Church calls the four weeks that lead up to Christmas “Advent,” and it is a time in which we are given the opportunity to prepare ourselves for the Lord’s coming. The song, “Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!” should continually arise in our hearts.

Live it with her

It is a very beautiful time period, because, as the days go by, the light draws closer to us and shines with increasing strength. It is the light that shines in the darkness, the sun that comes to reign. Mary, full of grace, chosen by God to be His Mother, teaches us how to live Advent. Her whole life was characterized by an attitude of recollection— “she kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2, 19). All Christians should imitate her attitude of meditating the Word of God. We often live very superficially, and this keeps us from discovering what God wants to say to us through His Word. We should imitate Mary, who kept silent and meditated all of these mysteries in her heart. If we live Advent close to her, she will help us, because she is the path that leads to Jesus. She will teach us to listen to Him and to keep His word in our hearts. We ask her to give us a new heart in which Jesus can be born.
